A Unique Philosophy for Learning
I view education and learning as the enjoyment of the continuous process of improvement. There will always be more to learn, there will always be more improvement to be made.
On the other hand, if we see education from the point of view of trying to cross a finish line (grades, tests, degrees, etc.), then the child will never feel satisfied, because they will put most of their focus on achieving a goal instead of the actual process of learning and discovery.
If instead we view learning as a fun and exciting journey of discovery and exploration, then the child can be happy every step of improvement and learning, with the understanding that there is no end in sight.
The universe is infinite, our minds are infinite, our inner capacity is infinite. Satisfaction is not to be found in trying to reach an end point-it is found when we step into the flow of the endless stream of discovery and development. What an adventure!
A Relationship with the Student Based On Compassion And Patience
My motto is “A Caring Relationship with the Student is My Secret to Success.” Compassion and patience go a long way when tutoring a child.
When they know that they are cared about and listened to, their capacity for learning is greatly enhanced.
A patient tutor can teach their student that mistakes are okay, and that they are actually a part of the learning process.
13 Years of Tutoring Experience, Including for Dyslexia
I have been tutoring children for 13 years, and have a wide range of experience to draw from.
I have learned many things about what makes effective teaching, much of which I actually learned from the students themselves! Much of my experience is with children who have dyslexia.
These kids need a special approach, which I have been fine tuning over the years.
Students with dyslexia benefit from the Orton-Gillingham approach, the Constructivist view of learning, building true confidence, and having just the right amount of challenge.
All of these are used at Awakening Potential.
Tutoring Using the
Orton-Gillingham Approach
At Awakening Potential students will be tutored using the Orton-Gillingham Approach to learning.
This approach utilizes systematic, structured, step-by-step lessons that give constant review of previous material, as well as using multiple modalities (hearing, seeing, etc.).
It is very effective for kids with dyslexia, as well as for any student struggling with a particular skill.
Building True Confidence
Confidence is not built by comparison to others, but by the student tapping into their own potential and becoming the best they can be. It comes through having a sense of control over their own ability to overcome personal challenges.
Success is defined as improvement in comparison to the student’s own previous abilities, and not through comparing themselves to other students.
This definition of success allows a student to always maintain confidence in themselves, and therefore make continual progress towards reaching their full learning potential.
Following the Constructivist Approach To Learning
This approach views knowledge as something that we actively construct within our minds, rather than as something that is given to us in a prepackaged way.
The Learner is not a ‘blank slate,’ and Learning is not something that happens through trying to mentally ‘download’ new information. Instead, the learner actively engages in creating their own understanding of the concepts being presented, making connections to prior knowledge.
This makes learning an interactive process, both between the learner and the content being learned, as well as between the learner and the Awakening Potential Tutor.
The constructivist view of learning allows for more engagement and is also more enjoyable for the learner as well. It also allows for the learning process to be ongoing and ever changing.
The constructivist approach easily allows for adapting lessons to the student’s needs.
Just the Right Amount of Challenge
The Zone of Proximal Development (or the “Goldilocks Strategy” as I call it) involves adjusting the level of challenge in a lesson to match the student’s ability.
You can think of it as the ‘Goldilocks’ method of teaching. If the material is too challenging, the student will become frustrated and lose confidence in themselves.
On the other hand, if it is too easy then they will quickly become bored and lose interest. But if the lessons are adapted to have the right amount of challenge, then not only will the student be more engaged, they will also learn more efficiently and thereby increase their confidence.
The lessons will constantly be adapted and changed to meet the student’s capabilities at the time. As they improve, the content can be made more difficult, but if they are having a very hard time, it can be made easier to accommodate.

More long-term structured support
Relationship Building Commitment Plan
- The relationship building commitment plan is the most popular plan, because it allows the tutor to learn more about the child’s needs over time, and thereby create lessons and instruction that are more fine tailored and adapted to the student.
- When the student and tutor are meeting together consistently on a weekly basis, more trust can be established, which allows for a more effective learning experience.
- Parents also love the ability to schedule and reserve sessions ahead of time for the entire month.
- You can have peace of mind that your child will be receiving support every week, without having to worry about whether or not there will be an open spot available.

About Me
Hello! My Name is Jordan Cromwell, and I am the Owner of Awakening Potential LLC, and an Awakening Potential Tutor. I have 14 years of experience tutoring students (including those with dyslexia and who are twice exceptional) to reach their full learning potential.
I do this by utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is effective for teaching all students, but in particular those with dyslexia and learning challenges. I also develop a long term relationship with my students, which greatly strengthens the learning process.
If you have any questions or would like to get in contact, you can do so here.

Orton-Gillingham is actually not a technique, but an approach to learning. It is a way of looking at the learning process, and it can be applied to teaching lessons for any subject. It includes these main elements:
- Structured lessons taught in a direct manner
- Systematic and sequential lessons
- Continuous review of previously learned material
- Use of multiple learning modalities

Most definitely it can! I have been using the Orton-Gillingham approach in all of my online tutoring sessions with students, and it works wonderfully. All of the essential elements of the approach can all be used in the online tutoring format, using the Zoom application.

As your child’s tutor, I’ll guide them to learning success with compassion and patience. I’ll utilize the Orton-Gillingham approach (which has been shown to be very effective to children with dyslexia) in their lessons. I’ll give them structured, systematic, step-by-step lessons using multiple learning modalities with plenty of opportunity for review.

That will depend on your child’s needs and the goals you have for tutoring. Kids with dyslexia need longer term support, most often continuing over a period of months. A child who does not have dyslexia, and/or who only needs to do some catching up with their skills may be fine with a few sessions. Those who are gifted and talented may need tutoring for either the short term or the long term, depending on their situation and personal needs. If you’re not sure, you can always start with a few sessions and then continue from there if you are happy with how your child is progressing. And of course we can always check in periodically and reevaluate when necessary.
All you need to do is download the Zoom app. I will have all of the materials we need for the session. On each day that you have a lesson scheduled, you will receive an email with the information to log on to the Zoom meeting. Log in to the meeting about 5 minutes before the session starts to ensure that everything is working properly. Then I’ll let you into the meeting and we’ll start the lesson. That’s it!

Most importantly, you will know your child is making progress because they will be increasing their confidence and improving their abilities in the area they are working on. More specifically, you will receive a Weekly Student Summary from me each week to describe their areas of strength and areas of further development. This will help you to see their progress on a weekly basis. Also, you can ask me questions any time about how your child is doing.
If your child has dyslexia, challenges with learning basic skills, is gifted and talented, or is twice exceptional, then the answer is yes! I have helped kids with these challenges to build confidence in their abilities, make progress, and become successful learners.
My general availability is Monday-Friday, from 10am-7pm MST (Colorado) time. Once we get in contact, I can let you know my current specific availability.
I have a 24 hour cancellation policy. However this can be waived in emergency situations such as accident, illness, etc.
Once we have gotten in contact and decided on the appropriate session format and pricing plan for your child’s situation, the next step is to schedule your session/s. Then, I will send you an invoice for the session/s, which you can pay via credit card processed securely with Stripe payments.
